Orthopedics is concerned with the study of the structure, function, and disease of the musculoskeletal system, which consists of the set of bones, joints, and muscles that enable the body to perform any movement.
Orthopedics includes:
- diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of acute, chronic, and degenerative diseases located in the organs of support and movement: spine and limbs;
- traumatology, that is, the set of therapies reserved for people affected by acute trauma, such as road, domestic or work accidents, which as a result of an increasingly hectic lifestyle, have grown enormously.
The orthopedic examination is held by a specialist and is essential for the formulation of the diagnosis. It allows evaluation of other important aspects: muscle strength, range of motion, swelling, reflexes.
Major orthopedic conditions include:
- arthroses, degenerative joint diseases
- meniscopathies
- periarthritis, inflammation of the tissues surrounding the joints
- acute and chronic tendinopathies
- Carpal tunnel syndrome, suffering of a median nerve in the hand
